Its because the geometry of the bed casting changes nearer to the headstock end on this lathe making a one sided stop tricky to fit. So to make the stop universally attachable on both the main part of the bed and also the bit near the chuck I found the easiest way was to span the full width of the bed. Inch square material seemed about right for the job.
I did give some thought to a microswitched trip but for the time being I'll see how I get on.
