Having just bought a Pools lathe with a flat beltpulley I cannot find 3/4 inch wide balata..
Not had experience of flat belting so I wonder if I can use 1inch anyway if its lined up well or can I cut astrip off it .? Will it fray and turn to dust before I can turn something?!

Try a multi-V belt as used for car alternators etc, and use it inside out.

Are there any multi-V/poly-V belt experts here?

HI been there and done it already ! It works, no need to turn inside out . The suppliers usually charge by the rib ,about 8 ribs for 3/4 inch wide .

I used a timing belt from my car inside out for years. Works fine!

                    Well thats sorted!
Now I dont have anything to use it on!
Buying things unseen has always too much luck involved but having seen this little Pools lathe with a repaired crack in the headstock for not much money I took the risk..Only wanted it for screwcutting anyway..
On receiving it I found there is a little play in thehead bearing,I m sure that can be adjusted, but also the saddle wont go forward..Its sounds like the thrwad is slippng..Shame as its good in all other respects so its going cheap on the classifieds ..I m going to buy an Ama cj18 and hope the gears dont pack up too soon..
There is one thing though..With the Pools came an original all steeltreadle in excellant condition which I m keeping..So the belt info isnt wasted!! Thanks everyone..

Ha ha! Amadeal cj18 gone up ?50 overnight!
Now does anyone know if SPG lathes are equivalent please? They are still quite a bit less and I could collect it..
What a palavar for a bit of screwcutting!
