I’m probably not the first to consider this but is it possible to convert a later Super 7 standard spindle lathe into the big bore version by substituting new parts? Are the headstock castings substantially different and or does anyone have a scan of the headstock parts and motorising parts page from the manual I can cross reference part numbers against? Thanks.

Hmmm… this thread didn’t quite garner the response I’d hoped for but I went to Myford on Saturday morning and got chatting to the lone fitter who was there and he confirmed that the headstock casting and even the clutch shaft body castings are all beefed up and different. Obviously all the bearings, bushes, pulleys etc are also all different. In a nutshell, it’s not practical to upgrade a standard 7 to a big bore version (and no, I wasn’t the first person to consider it). Although obviously looking superficially similar, almost none of the whole headstock end of the lathe is interchangeable.

            Hi Chris

Well that may be due to your thread title – Big Bore Myford Conversion
Had you called it – Conversion of Myford to Big Bore – I’d have been on to it like a shot!
Anyway nothing lost for me as you have done all the leg work and I can now put all those fantasies out of my mind ! Thanks for the service – sad though ‘aint it?

            Regards

I’m sure many people have had the same obvious thought. I’d hesitate to say it was impossible to convert standard 7 parts because someone will probably prove it can be done but they’ll be a braver (and by necessity, better equipped) man than me before I start a massive alteration to an otherwise near new lathe. Having seen the differences and the amount of remodelling needed, trust me. Forget it. It’s like trying to modify an Escort into a Mondeo. Just buy a Mondeo.

How to convert your Myford to a large spindle bore:

1/ Sell the Myford for the best second hand price you can get.
2/ Buy a brand new lathe for the same money that has twice the centre height and twice the spindle bore.

                regards
                John

Rather ironic that they had a big bore ML7 out in 1955 isn’t it ?

And an all geared head model the following year.

I doubt if the home user market, or even the small industrial users, could have justified the extra cost back then. My 1953 vintage ML7 is certainly not the big bore model!

                    regards
                    John
