Good morning ,This is my first post, so hello to you all.I have a cva lathe with a taper turning attachment fitted, i need to remove the crossslide-RUST,any idea what the procedure is?.The taper attachment needs a refurb anyway, just don`t want to take apart in wrong order.Thanks for any help given-glen

Hi Graham,thanks for the reply.It`s a mk1a series3 toolroom lathe-aug 56.based on a monarch10ee but without the electric problems,although if i could get my hands on a 10ee,drool!!!.I have been on tonys site-mechanical porn!.i will take it apart,just thought i might get some tips before i start.I`ve had the lathe for a while,just never got round to fetlin her.what model holbrook? glen

The Holbrook that I worked was a very nice machine, but I must say my heart lies with the Hardinge HLV, but no doubt not all will agree with me.

I do – thread-cutting heaven! But that’s going to have to wait for a while…

I was going to comment on what I have to do to achieve the same thing on the Kerry, but as John has more direct experience, I’ll leave it to him.

I have one and it is possible to just remove the cross slide without touching the TT attachment,

Give me a few hours to go look and post back.

Thanks John,glad you have been in touch as i know you have a cva.I hope you don`t mind me picking your brains in the future.

Gray, I will have to find out about the holbrook, sounds like a nice peice of kit.Has anybody got a No1 cva-the round one before they squared it off.It would be nice to see some photos if you don`t mind-never seen one

Update.On closer inspection of the tta i found three of the four bearings have shattered!,so i am going to strip the whole unit down as there are bits everywhere.should be fun

Just in case you haven’t done it before I found a bucket/tray of good malt vinegar very effective in removing rust from the old pultra cross slide bits I had.

There are piccies in my profile.

Dunk the dismantled gear for up to a week in the vinegar and the rust gets eaten away to a kind of gunk you can clean off with a soft wire pad pan scourer and rubber gloves, almost no elbow grease is required.

Wipe it dry and oil it up.
