VFD and replacement motor recommendation

Hi all,

I have tried searching, ended up more confused.

I have decided to upgrade my Boxford lathes to VFD to have more control over surface speed as well as all the other benefits that come with it.
Trouble I am having is the number of different brands of inverter available. What do people recommend? Any I should avoid?
Same story with the motor. I am after a 80 frame size foot mount in 1hp. Recommendations on this?
UK supplier with best prices and customer support?

Hi Dan,

I am running a TEC 3-phase motor with a Transwave inverter. It is almost 3 years old and has been working well. If I had the funds I would upgrade my small lathe to 3-phase/inverter drive.

Another vote for Newton Tesla. I've now upgraded 3 machines using their products and found them to be very helpful and supportive.

The smaller of me 2 lathes [Warco GH750 ] is powered by a Siemens 3 phase motor, and a Eurotherm Drive [Now made by Parker SSD ] the set up is now around 15 years old and has, and still is, working perfectly. Motor and Drive were supplied by Transwave.

Yet another vote for Newton Tesla, I've now done 4 machines with their inverters, the box of tricks gets smaller every time. If you ask them nicely they will set it all up for you and sell you the pendant controller.

Went with Transwave for my Myford Tr-Leva VFD upgrade and also with Transwave for a rotary 3 phase converter for my Hardinge, and in both cases the company was a pleasure to deal with.

No other link apart from being a very satisfied customer.

Remember to get a motor that has the same RPM at 50hz as the motor you are replacing. The number of poles of a 3 phase motor give different nominal speeds.
