Hi all,

It is indeed a tapping machine as I have just received this from a chap who seems to know his onions:

It can work as a drill but is a tapping machine which is why it has the two v belt pulleys , and has three pulleys on the back arm , and the double pulley diameter matches the distance between the hight of the two v pulleys , so the drive comes up from the motor to the over the top of one the double pulleys round the front , then back round the other double pulley and back round the front , now driving it in the opposite direction and the back down to the motor over the single pulley , so pushing down on the lever drives the tap in and lifting it the reverses and unthreads it , how much pressure you put on the lever then determine how much the various cone clutches 'bite ' and you can hear this and so is very good when using very fine taps , as it keeps everything in line and working gently , especially in sticky brass . It uses P6 collets but the P5 collets in Favorite jewelling sets will fit too . They are rare and not many people know how good they are as Bergeron M 0.6 taps are now £45 and mine has lasted 15 years with this tool !

Hi All,

Having established that this is a reversible tapping machine I am still struggling to define the exact collets that will fit. Standard 6mm watchmakers collets are way too large. Here are some close up pics with dimensions if anyone can shged any light please:

I have never seen any this small?

Martin,

I wrongly assumed that they might be Schaublin P4.5

P.S. … I'm rather puzzled by your question (a) because your correspondent mentioned P6 and P5 collets, and (b) because you said it had gone to a new home.

Hi Michael,

The correspondent whose remarks I quoted was clearly partially in error regarding the collets. Seems only to have muddied the waters slightly.

The unit was sold to a very high quality professional watchmaker. Wisely, he contacted me after paying for but before shipping to clarify the collet size and kindly sent me a 6mm collet which was way too large.

This has at least avoided the anxiety of sending a cast iron item through the post not once but twice!

I have since refunded him and continue to try and find out exactly what this machine takes in order to describe it more accurately when I list it for sale next time. He too has some 4.5mm collets with a female thread for the drawbar which according to my measurements will also be too large

It is difficult for me to measure this small opening accurately but have done my best.

Any help on this would be really welcome!

Martin,

Can you take an impression of the female taper with something like polymorph, or the stuff dentists take impressions of teeth with? Possibly use a smear of grease as a release agent. In my experience it's far easier to get accurate dimensions from the resulting impression than from the original.
