Router bits

Hi guys.

ive been reading a thread on another forum.

this guy wants to round the corners on a steel block. Which made me think off wood router bits. I used to do quite a bit of woodwork and have a lot of router bits of all shapes. These are carbide tipped, and I was wondering if they could be used in a mill on steel ?

what do the more experience of you think ?

I really wouldn't recommend it. They tend to have only two flutes and a narrow shank.

If you do a search on "corner rounding cutter" you'll see the difference.

On ali perhaps but steel probably not. If the router bit is ok to sacrifice then try it. Don't run it fast though.

They work fine on aluminium but I've not tried them on steel, as captain says corner rounding bits would be better or grind your own from a blumt milling cutter

If you look here **LINK** Tom Lipton uses one to machine the steel spokes on a large handwheel.

here he uses it to round over the steel rim of the wheel **LINK**

It worked for him OK.

Hi guys.

thanks for the replies. And Roy for the Oxtool links. It's a little while since I went on Toms site, I must do a bit of catch up with him. I think, as. My cutters are all 1/4" shank, I'll give it a miss on that one. It was just a thought. I'll stick to the grinder and file for now lol.

You could run the side of an ordinary milling cutter at 45 degrees along the edge of a steel block to do the bulk of the work

Then finish with a file and grinder

The side of a small 6mm cutter can do an amazing amount of work, even on a hobby machine

To cut a chamfer, a multi tooth counter sink bit does a good job.

I tried a vee router bit to cut some steel, didn't last long but it just about did the job. I wouldn't bother again though.
