My late father’s steam locomotive

Hi,

I would appreciate some advice on what my mother could do with my late father's steam locomotive that he lovingly constructed over a period of some 40 years.

She is keen that it goes to a good home with someone who will get as much pleasure from it as he did over the years.

And I'm at a loss to know how to find that someone! Hence this post. Perhaps you're a memebr of a group who knows someone looking for a high quality complex project to take on?

The loco is in Chepstow, so would be most convenient for someone in the South Wales or Bristol/Gloucestershire area.

Although she could do with some money (I really don't know what it's worth), I think the most important thing to her is that it goes to a good home.

I'm surprised no-one has responded to your request Richard.

I would suggest that you contact one of the local Model Engineering Societies and ask for their help and advice. They are fairly easy to find via the web.

For instance, you can contact the Bristol MES at this email address: [email protected]

I'm sure they would be happy to assist. I'm not a member of Bristol MES by the way but I've always found my local MES groups very helpful

You could try putting it in a specialist steam engine auction.

It will find it's own market value and if it is bought by the trade it will eventually end up with someone who appreciates it.

I can see the model is well packed in a frame for transport. It looks like a fine example. Better photos out of the packing frame would allow prospective purchasers a better view of its merits.

The same would apply to the rest of the collection. Old tools, machinery and bits and pieces (some of which will quite sought after) are becoming increasingly difficult to source. Get several opinions if you can, before you start disposing of the collection.

Beware of dealers who say how bad the market for trains is and that most of the other stuff is worthless…….

Was he a member of a club? that might be a good place to start? they should know what the models are.

Hi Richard, welcome to the forum.

Just a word of warning re auction houses. While Im sure most are quite reputable I know of a case where a very nice loco was sent for auction in Newbury the engine sold for over £800 and that went straight into the owners pocket who decided to go bankrupt and then let his wife restart the business.

Currently ongoing with Trading Standards.
