I've bit the bullet and bought the £55 one on eBay , I guess now I'll need to swat up on how to install and use 😊.

      Thanks

The starting point for connecting your VFD is to remove the capacitor and mains cable from the motor. Leave the three links in their current "delta" position and connect the VFD UVW outputs to the matching terminals on the motor. Connect up a good earth as well. You will probably need a length of suitable 3 phase cable for this (3 cores plus earth). If a 3 phase motor rotates in the wrong direction then just swap any two of the power cables and it should go in the opposite direction. The invertor may work out of the box and not need setting up as a lot of new ones get feedback from the output to set themselves up when switched on.

So correct me if I’m wrong …. the brass tab connectors on the motor are to be left in the configuration they’re in just now . Sorry for being dumb 😁

You are not wrong. Leave the brass links exactly as they are. Those are then the three places to connect the three output wires from the VFD.

The VFD output will be labelled U V and W but the letters are not important, just wire each one to one of the brass links. (and an earth wire).

The manual for your VFD will probably have a basic wiring diagram but initially all you need to be concerned with is connecting the mains input to the VFD and the wiring to the motor.

Most likely you will be able to carry out basic control of the motor using the VFD buttons and display but it wont be long before you want to control the machine with 'remote' switches (and a potentiometer) that are mounted on the machine itself.

As this is the first VFD you are going to use please dont hesitate to ask questions here, once you experience the benefits of three phase and VFDs you will be a convert!

If you look inside the terminal lid there should be a picture/graphic showing the link settings for star and delta.

Forgive my ignorance chaps but can these inverters be plugged into a normal single phase socket or do they have to be connected to the house mains switchbox ?

Yes, at that rating plug into a normal socket. It's almost certain that the inverter you buy will have the ability to run FW and REV, you shouldn't have to bother with swapping phases round.

Sean connect your motor to the VFD as above but you will also need to setup the VFD to suit the size of motor it's connected to, this is relatively easy follow the instructions in the manual that comes the VFD or asking the question on the forum one thing to note though as V*eng pointed out your motor is not 1HP as you stated in your opening post it is in fact .37kw 1/2 hp important to get it correct when setting up the VFD

Sean. If the VFD is used, as we think, you may not have a manual with it. (The one I have on my lathe was Second User). Do a google search and the chances are you'll find the manual on t'interweb. If you have any problems, ask away. I did and much help was forthcoming here.

If you look at the motor plate the current is less than 2 amps so any mains cable that can carry more than 2 amps will do (probably 1.5mm2 is widely available). It may be helpful if it has a screen as well since sometimes VFDs can result in interference from the power cable and motor. 3 core mains or 3 core mains plus screen cable will do if you run a separate earth wire to the motor. The ideal would be 4 core mains plus screen but you may end up having to buy 100m to get 2m of it.

If you run a separate earth then any mains cable with an earth (ie 3 cores) will do to start with but the cable core colouring will be very non-standard with the earth being used as a power cable. If you do this then the usual thing to do is put red tape around the ends of each core to show it is live as is done with two way switching circuits. If you do get interference of any sort then you can look for a suitable screened cable with a bit less time pressure on you.

You'll notice that although it's labelled as Omron, it's actually made by Yaskawa (although they are different companies). Haven't looked but that might give you more choice of manuals etc.

Put the links back to where they were!

You asked about this previously and I replied that the links should be used as the three connections to the inverter and used exactly as your photograph showed them originally.

May also be worth mentioning that the inverter gives you 230V three phase output so that is why you need to have the tabs as Ian said. YOU are not getting 400V three phase out of it so don't place the tabs as it shows for 400V.

So the tabs would only be in that configuration if there was 400v feed

Hi Sean the inverter in most cases can be controlled by it's front panel, normally you would only need to get a 'pot' if you want to control the speed remotely
