Has anyone fitted a machine dro 'Chester 20v' kit to a Warco wm16? Any tips for fitting would be most welcome.

Paul, I dont know anything re the Chester 20v DRO,s and the Warco WM16 but I recently fitted a basic £120 three axis set (from ARC) to my SX2P mill and I think it is probably the best mod I could have done to the mill. You wont regret fitting them and will probably wonder how you ever managed without them.

I have a Chester 20 V mill and a few years ago I fitted Allendale glass scale DRO’s to it, it was a simple process, mine came with some very useful alloy brackets which can be tailored to fit the components, these were very useful. The preferred option for the X axis scale is to fit on the rear of the table but that would have restricted travel on the Y axis so I opted for the easy way out and fitted it across the front of the table, it means that you lose the table stops or you need to configure them in a different position, not a problem for me I just removed them as I didn’t need them, the table has very long travel so probably never need them anyway. I had no problems it was very straightforward.

Yes – see my post including photos on a similar query about a WM16B, https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=144000 . NB My mill is a standard WM16, not the belt drive WM16B version.

I had no significant problems fitting the kit, and I can now make a mess of things to a higher level of precision!

Looks good, I'll have to check clearance for rotary table handle but would also like it sited at front of table.

Hi Paul

Just gone out for a quick measure. The extruded aluminium section that covers the X magnetic strip and sensor:

• Protrudes 27mm max in front of the table
• Top is typically 6mm below the table surface
• Has an external radius on top front approx 10mm

I have not had any issues with a 150mm rotary table I had from RDG, which has, when mounted on the mill table conventionally on its main mounting surface with the rotab axis vertical and the handwheel at the front:

• Micrometer dial extends approx 1mm below table mounting surface at 110mm from table centre
• Handwheel extends approx 21mm below table mounting at 150mm from table centre
