Materials sources?

I am just starting to experiment with my recently purchased Myford M type and need to get some materials to work with. A local engineer very kindly let me have some offcuts for a couple of beers. Where would forum members suggest that I source my materials from?

For the first year or two you'll need to munch a lot of metal to get some skills

I used scrapyards, until the H+S busybodies closed that route in my area

Still the best route for practicing if you can find a scrappie, 20 quid keeps you going for a month or two, an M type can munch through a lorra lorra metal

The only downsid eto the scrap suppiers is that you won't really know what you are turning. You could pick up a difficult to machine steel and spend ages trying to get a good finish with no joy.

A local steel stockholder is a reasonably inexpensive way to buy or one of the many ME suppliers will do short lengths of the types of materials we tend to use, a few that come to mind are

College engineering

M-Machine

Noggin End

EKP

Or if you are not far from Sandown park racecourse pop in to the ME exhibition this weekend and pick up some materials there, the entrance fee will be no more than postage on a pack of metal

hi i have used all listed there apart from ekp but i favour m achine for the amount of differant stuff they carry and there prices are reasonble especially when you do only need an inch or 2 i did a largish order must of weighed around 10+ kg and i had it next day

I would echo the warning about metal of unknown type…it can be of extreemly doubtful parentage..and if you are a newcomer to turning/machining you might not know weather its you or the stuff…get bargains by all means but get some known free cutting steel to gain experience and confidence.
