Martin Evan’s Holmside Loco – Advice Please

Afternoon All,

I was impressed with a Holmside 0-6-0 7.1/4" loco at my local club recently and wondered if it was a suitable project for a beginner? I will obviously ask at my club but just wanted to also seek advice on here as you are all so helpful.

Drawings are available from Reeves and Blackgates and My Hobby Store. Would there be any difference in the quality and accuracy of the drawings from these suppliers?

Finally does anyone know of source of information about errors and discrepancies?

I don't know how the others produce their prints, but the MyHobbyStore plans are all scanned digitally and all those I have seen are very good quality prints, but they will all be the same basic drawing.

I always regretted building a Simplex as a "Beginners" locomotive after listening to advice from the club regulars. It worked fine but I always regretted that I didn't build what I really fancied at the time which was a "Springbok". I am a firm believer that if you think you have the skills to build a beginners loco you might just as well build what you want.

I have seen a Holmside running and it was a nice loco with lots of power. They are not a particularly complicated loco, the component count is relatively low compared to any loco with trucks or bogies etc so I would think that apart from its size it would differ little to most beginners loco's anyway. As to known errors in the drawings, I am sure there will be somebody here who can tell you about them.
