My latest venture is building a Gauge1 4-6-2 loco which I would like to fire with an LPG poker burner. Why? because I have not tried out this method as yet and as a bonus it seems to be a relatively simple way of powering a loco. My problem lies in finding a formula for flue(s) sizes and burner size.
When using alcohol as fuel I have found that the general rule of flue tubes being no longer than 20 times the diameter, flue area of about 1/2″ squared and a heating surface of about 45 sq. ins was about right for medium size locos.
My current project has a boiler 11″ x 2 3/16″ so is a little bit larger than medium size. I am somewhat reluctant to embark on a suck it and see experiment. Any advice from the Forum will be greatly appreciated.
