The Board of Governors at the Parish Workhouse have done me the honour of appointing me Stipendiary Master of the Kitchen this year . This is a responsible position requiring Great Thrift and few Culinery Skills .
The Sumptuous Feast for the Board is no problem – I'll get that from the supermarket as ready meals .
My real difficulties are in providing food for the Paupers . I've got a Quartern Loaf and a Piece of Cheese for the outside paupers at the Gate but I need to make the usual Gruel for the resident ones . My recipe is one cup of Oatmeal simmered in a cauldron of Water and with a little salt and a Sprig of Holly added at the end
I expect we'll have the usual problem with that Oliver asking for more – but we've learned a trick or two since last time . Study of Government practices over pay awards and such over many years gave me an idea – we've had new bowls made 40% the size of the original ones . So now Oliver and his cronies can have their Double Helping and we save 20% in gruel .
Peace on Earth and Good Will towards all Good People ( and a Pox on the rest ) .
Michael Williams .
