Happy Christmas everyone, and hope you all have a Wonderful 2013,

Thanks all too for the helpful help and advice I've been freely given since joining the forum, even as a 'lurker', also to the site owners and staff for making this forum available, and finally to David as magazine editor, for his endless patience and valuable time spent dealing with hassles on our behalf, often beyond his remit!

      All the Very Best,

      John.

Can you post a picture of one Bob? My daughter isn't greatly keen – she got as far as turning the flywheel of an oscillating engine but I think the time involved overcomes her interest.

She was much more engaged by designing and making a photo-etched dog tag, for example

A quick and simple project would be good.

The Board of Governors at the Parish Workhouse have done me the honour of appointing me Stipendiary Master of the Kitchen this year . This is a responsible position requiring Great Thrift and few Culinery Skills .

The Sumptuous Feast for the Board is no problem – I'll get that from the supermarket as ready meals .

My real difficulties are in providing food for the Paupers . I've got a Quartern Loaf and a Piece of Cheese for the outside paupers at the Gate but I need to make the usual Gruel for the resident ones . My recipe is one cup of Oatmeal simmered in a cauldron of Water and with a little salt and a Sprig of Holly added at the end

I expect we'll have the usual problem with that Oliver asking for more – but we've learned a trick or two since last time . Study of Government practices over pay awards and such over many years gave me an idea – we've had new bowls made 40% the size of the original ones . So now Oliver and his cronies can have their Double Helping and we save 20% in gruel .

Peace on Earth and Good Will towards all Good People ( and a Pox on the rest ) .

            Michael Williams .
