I like using electrolytic de-rusting Bill.

It's simple and cheap to do (assuming you already have a battery charger) and it will not damage the part any further than the rust has already done so (e.g. pitting). It will also tend to loosen any paint that is already flaking. A good scrub with a very fine wire wool will usually clean things up nicely.

Dry the part and prime it quickly before it re-rusts….

You could try Oxalic Acid. Available via EBay etc. Soak rinse and repeat as necessary. It’s cheap and quite effective.

Be aware that shot blasting thin sections can cause distortion, the blasted side will end up convex, and even if you blast the other side, it is unlikely to go back flat.

Brick cleaner is very good, I saw a can in wickes a few weeks ago which surprised me as I thought corrosive materials like that had been withdrawn from public sale.

As IanT says make sure it is perfectly dry (I place mine on a radiator for half an hour) then use primer I've done hundreds of parts this way and never had a problem with re-appearing rust.
