As a result of the pandemic many of us will probably have a little bottle of hand sanitiser around the house. Many will also use touch screen devices, phones, tablets and laptops, often in the workshop. The screens get covered with greasy fingerprints and general crud. A small blob of sanitiser wiped over the screen with a dry tissue and polished off leaves screens sparkling clean – much cheaper than those little tissues in sachets and minimal waste.

A good idea – thankyou!

Although my workshop calculator is a cheap arithmetic-only one, the scientific ones staying in the house, I keep and use it in a polythene bag.

I’ve also draped a polythene sheet over the inverter controls on the lathe, and a large “Cellophane” bag loosely over the mill’s DRO. The latter is long enough to cover also the mains switch on the back of the unit, and very loose so as not to impede cooling.

The protector on the lathe’s controls is one of the MEW magazine’s postal bags! It’s retained by a small, wooden tool shelf resting on the chip-tray below the headstock.

  Don’t use tissue on specs. It’s abrasive and wears away the various coatings on modern lenses. Always use soft cloth.

Yes tissues contain microscopic metalic particles (from my optician)

Agreed, as far as normal household tissues go. Some also have additives like aloe vera or perfumes, which don’t help in getting a streak-free finish either.

Proper lens-cleaning tissues are available, though, which are very good when used with the correct cleaning fluids.
