Hello all, I have been a lurker for a few months and have been amazed at the wealth of knowledge shewn and the trouble taken by members to provide answers to what must seem asinine questions. I have taken the plunge to ask such a question myself regarding wiring the three phase motor for my wadkin BZL lathe. I have an IMO EDX 1 HP Idrive inverter. I understand the priciples of three phase but the manual describes elaborate earthing arrangements. not a just a simple daisy chain to the mains earth and shielded cable for thre thee phase legs to the motor . My question is are these steps necessary for commercial elf and safety application or is it sufficint to merely provide adequate sized conductors ie 1.5mm for input phase, neutral and earth and the three legs and earth to the motor. I should be most grateful for any advice that anyone with experience of these drives could give me.

Inverters generate a lot of high frequency noise in addition to to the power frequency they are intended to generate. The more robust earthing/grounding systems and the shielded cable specifications are an effort (more less effective) by the manufacturer to prevent interference in other eletrical/electronic systems you may be using. You can always ignore these specifications but don't be surprised if you get radio and television interference or erratic operation of other electronic gadgetry such as hi-fi systems, microwaves, computers etc.

            Hello Ken,

Thank you for your clear explanation and warning. I shall follow the instructions given with the inverter.

Be sure to earth the screens where the manufacturer states in the manual and NOT elsewhere. I have four inverter systems wired by the book and all are OK.
