      Hi All,

I'm after a quick bit of advice in regards to the value of a Myford super7 lathe. My father sadly passed away last summer and one of the items he stored in the garage was this lathe.

The lathe originally belonged to his uncle, who used it to build steam trains (which are also in the process of finding a new home smiley)

I found someone interested to buy it, and they seem nice and genuine but at the moment I'm only going off their valuation, so I hoped someone could provide some guidance?

      Many Thanks,

      Ben

Looks like a clean, unmolested power cross feed Super 7B. Do you have any other tooling with it (chucks, faceplates, steadies, vertical slide, cutting tools etc.) that would or could be included ?

As shown I would estimate £1500 – £1750 – with more tooling / accessories than shown £2000+ depending on what else you can find. Have a look for Myford Super 7 on Ebay under Completed Items with Price+Postage Highest first to see what recently sold or (didn't) as opposed to what is currently listed. There are cheaper Super 7s on there, but the cheaper ones tend to not have power cross feed, the screwcutting gearbox or the Griptru chuck fitted to your example & have fewer items of tooling.

Then there was this one. **LINK**

Quite likely taken off epay to avoid their charges. Or maybe the seller had seen this thread on here. **LINK**

Ben, I would suggest Nigels valuation should be a minimum you can expect, as he suggests look on Ebay there are several well over £1750 but of course they are or appear to be later vintage but in reality there is little to no difference other than the paint finish. Look for the serial number usually in the front of the bed and then on Myford web site to find the approximate year of manufacture, I would hazard a guess its 1974-78 ??

You could of course advertise it on here !

                Hi

Tony at lathes.co.uk will advise on pricing if you advertise on his website, he does charge for the advert ( around £40 ish from memory) we found his services very useful when we cleared a deceased friends workshop last year.

Send some clear photo's of the machine , and all the accessories, then give him a ring to discuss the advert, he will identify what is there for you, and word the advert accordingly. I have sold a couple of machines on his site after giving up on the scammers and time wasters on ebay, it proved painless and easier than I expected.

Wow, thanks for the rapid replies

I did do a bit of ebay research, but I was concious that the value of the lathe was probably in things that I couldn't see, like the power cross feed, the screwcutting gearbox or the Griptru chuck, as mgnbuk says. So I wasn't sure where this lathe would fall on the ebay scale (£700 – £3325).

I didn't think about advertising here – in the past I've seen that forum rules only allow you to sell if you set the price – which is my problem at the moment! haha

I forgot to add, the gentleman I mentioned gave a similar estimate so it’s comforting to read your estimates in the same ball park.

There are many boxes of mandrel, drill chucks, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, cutting tools, knurling tools and even some stock material (brass, copper). eBay would suggest some of these (chucks for example) might be a couple of hundred each?

I recently paid £2100 for my super 7B. It is a tad later model with the different belt cover. The earlier ones like yours has the large 7 cast in. The later ones have the speeds plate there. Other than already said that one will have most of the things myford ever put on them. It will be imperial. Mine is 1977 so yours must be earlier than that.

As already suggested copy the Number either at the front of the bedways, left side under the chuck or at the right rear under the tailstock Go onto the myford site & at the bottom of the page on the left they have all the serial numbers & years. Also under the super 7 on the same page you will find concise details of the models.

With all the bits I would think low to mid 2k. Never less than 2 for one with all those features. Also think about breaking the parts down. You could sell the other chucks & gear all separately & probably make quite a bit more than all as a complete package. Don't be letting it go for peanuts. A good one is still worth good money. Some forum members on here cannot understand why they fetch silly money , but they do which you should take advantage of. If any dealer gives you an offer then work out he will be selling it for a grand more.

Don't forget that model has every part still available for it.

                        Steve.

Sounds like the bloke making the offer is a decent sort, seems he could have easily lowballed you.

Maybe return the favour and let it go complete for what might be a bit less than ultimate value.

However if you want maximum return, break it.

Second best route for profit is ebay, but be prepared for some pain.

Alan, I think you might have summarised my thoughts better than I could even articulate them, thank you. The lathe etc. is at my mums, 180 miles from me, and is one of many things for us to sort though so for us there is some value in someone taking it all away at once and saving us the hassle of individual sales.

Sensible decision. For someone who is not familiar with the equipment, breaking it down into parts and flogging it on eBay can be very difficult, time consuming, and probably not what the family wants to be doing at this point in time. For example, just removing that GripTru chuck to sell it can possibly result in serious damage to the backgears in the headstock if not done correctly. Then the value and saleability of the lathe is reduced considerably, unless you can pull it all apart and fix it, which is an advanced level job.

If you can get a fair price for the lot and Mum is not desperate for the last 50 quid you can squeeze out of it, it's by far the best way to go. Makes it quick and easy, which can be important than at such times.

If you mean my post. Then I was recommending selling the parts that are separate from the lathe. The op said it had various parts with it, not on it.

                                    I took a look this morning and the serial number is SK131054, so from Tony's website, "SK130920 – SK144902 = 1976 – 1979".

You seem a friendly bunch so I'm going to take liberties here and post some more photos of all the 'bits' to see if you have further guidance.

First item, as far as I can make out, is possibly a milling attachment, or maybe a standalone machine?

Then there are all these, I've no idea if they're attachments for the lathe, milling machine or some separate machine entirely. I guess there is some value to the motor at least?

Then what I guess are tooling and bits for the lathe; cutters, reamers, chucks etc. From my basic knowledge, researching online the drill chucks can be ~£50, chucks ~£200-400?

That is one photo, but there are also boxes of stock material and so I had to create a shared album, there were just too many photos! haha

Ben you have a small fortune in parts there. I would not know where to begin. Profit wise. Everything needs selling separately. But app in your position that may not be possible. It's a shame you did not have an ebay savvy friend that could list them all.

The Rodney is a milling attachment. One on ebay now asking £350. Probably not worth that much but still a rare value item. The rotating table will always fetch £50 + . There is a vertical attachment worth around £50. Then those chucks can be anything from £50ish to a few hundred depending on the make. I can only wish you good luck & do hope you get a good offer for it all. If you divulged what you were offered then someone on here may give better advise than me.

thank you steve. He suggested £1300 – 1700 for the lathe alone, I didn’t quite realise just how much other stuff there was so he also isn’t aware of those yet. See what he says when he comes to view it all. At least now, as J Hancock said, I’m at least beginning to get an idea of value so I know the guy doesn’t take liberties tomorrow.

                                                      Steve.

thank you steve.

Ben I do think £1300 is very low for that model. I also know there seems to be a huge difference from top to bottom prices & some do expect too much for them. I would have thought £1700 would be an absolute bottom figure. I guess he will maybe offer about £300 to £400 for the bits. I can see you dilemma here. Just do not undersell what you may later regret. Sorry for your loss. Regards

                                                      Steve.
