My locomotive is a piston valved (two and a half inch Pacific) I have had it running (and not) on various sessions, I think the locknuts somehow moved and caused problems. At present the loco is running ( in full forward gear) but only for a short burst and petering out in a sluggish way. Could this be caused by uneven opening of the valves? Any suggestion gratefully accepted!

Does the loco seize up and stop or does it just 'run out of puff' with everything still free to turn?

Thanks for the reply (Nick) It doesn't seize up just doesn't run as long as it did, Previously the engine has run almost as long as the compressor applied air

'almost' as long? it shouldn't falter if the compressor is supplying air. Unless it is a very very small compressor so the tank runs out.

It sound like it has something loose, perhaps in the valve gear, that moves out of place and has been getting looser.
