Hi

I have acquired a nice Tom Senior Mill, the Newer Denford Model c1973 I think, with an S-Type head but no horizontal capability.

It runs very well, relatively quiet and no play, but I cannot find any maintenance points (oil/grease etc) for the quill.

Does anyone know if this is a self contained, maintenance free quill or if I am missing something?

I have the Tom Senior vertical light. The lube is done at the front of the Quill. I think there are 2 oil holes. They look like a ball bearing. They are where your depth gauge rod is at the very front centre. My head does look slightly different to yours though. Very similar.

Yes, I've seen the heads with oil points on the front at the top and on the quill feed, but this head doesn't have them, any ideas?

What you have there is a likely a rare beast.

There was a thread on a Denford forum a few years ago that referred to a rare late model Denford/Senior mill fitted with a different vertical head with an R8 spindle. The suggestion in that thread was that the head might have been based on that of the Denford "3C" model – but that was speculative.

It's possible that yours is one of those (or indeed "it"!). In any event, it's not fitted with what we think of as a standard TS "Light Vertical"/"S-type" quill feed head.

My advice is to try the Tom Senior group on "Groups.io", where the previous Yahoo-based group migrated to.

Hi Clem

This is indeed an R8 spindle. It was originally acquired from Rolls Royce by the previous owner. However, I still can't find the oil points 😉

I will check out the Groups.io as you suggest, thank you

There are some printable pdfs showing parts drawings and general user manuals on the Denford forum for Tom Senior mills. Amongst them is a head with an R8 spindle. It is a very different design from the light vertical head.

Steve, Take a look at the manual for the Denford T1P Turret Mill. You can find it in this forum topic:-

Looks to me like they used the same milling head on your machine.

Yes that looks identical, except that there is no oil cup.

I'll have to fish around to see if there's an oil nipple to somewhere. Many thanks!

There is another variation in the TS manual, which is in the Denford listing of pdfs. Look at the Tom Senior milling machine manual, dated 27 Dec 2014.

It there no hole at all in that front top position shown. As it looks like a substantial lube arrangement inside the casting.

Hi Gents – It looks like I have just got one of these too. Steve confirmed that it looked the same as his and a Denford. It has the R8 spindle.

I'd add a pic but not sure how ?

The head is quite different from the LV type, I wonder if you could remove the wheel mecannism and get enough access to the quill to give it some oil. Even extending the quill to its limit would expose some of it to oil, even if it was messy.
