      HI

      I planning a project

I am looking for a Heavy hollow round mild steel bar,

      ideal size would be

      5 inches OD diameter

2.5 inches ID ( not critical as could be bored out to size)

      length 7-8 inches

Any ideas of a supplier please

      many thanks

      ray

          Hello Ray,

You might struggle to find that, but if it doesn't need to be hollow to that dimension down the full length, then ordinary thick walled pipe would serve with mild steel plugs at the two ends, bored out to the I/D to suit the project.

I hope that is a useful suggestion
          Brian

What you are looking for is called 'hollow bar'. What prosaic people we engineers are! One supplier is **LINK**

but nearest they list is 125mm OD * 70 ID or 130 OD, 75 ID. If these are any use give them a ring and ask how to buy it. Sit down first, it's not going to be cheap!

Just checked tonight, only got 3" with 1 /12" bore. Bit of 4 1/2 x 2" bore but only 5" long but got shed loads of 5" solid, at least 15 foot in two different lengths.

This stuff is mega expensive as it's correct title is known as drawn over mandrel, DOM, and so has no seams.

Not checked prices but I'll bet solid is cheaper. Only problem with these sizes are you are not looking for a cheap supplier but a loacl one where you can collect as very heavy and carriage will be as much as the material and remember you are paying VAT on both, but only one you keep wink

Try Steel Express, anything on this list of any use?

Scimitar Steels stock 5" solid bar but as you don't give any information on your location it may be too far away for you to collect it.

                  Les.

                    HI ALL

                    Thank you for the replies

The item forms part of a press – so needs to be very thick walled

I have located a 5 inch solid , cut to length,

but I will need to bore it out

                    thank you ray

Just a thought – you might be able to reduce the required thickness quite a bit if you specify an alloy steel of higher strength. Having said that getting hold of anything in small quantities can be tricky. This reminds me a bit of the very high pressure pipes that I come across in my work.

Its a lot quicker and cheaper to bore it out from solid, plus there is a far wider choice of material,e.g. high strength,or free cutting, hollow section steel is not easy to source and it might be difficult to machine.

Proper hollow section or DOM is very expensive to produce and consequently they only use decent steel to produce it and it normally machines up very good.

I buy a lot of offcuts from some of the specialist tube merchants to make bearing rings for motors and none of the stuff I get is general commercial quality, it's similar to EN8 at the least.
