      Hi Guys,

This is my first time here, and I have to be honest, I'm not a model engineer-I only signed up because I need something made, so mod feel free to move this to the correct part of the forum.

Essentially what I need is a 300mm long morse taper extension sleeve that is 2mt both ends, and am finding it impossible to find one to buy.

I am a woodturner and don't have the kit or tools to do it, though hopefully one day I will.

Can anyone help m, or at least point me in the right direction?

      Many thanks

      Dan.

A ready made male to female MT2 300mm long extension is probably not something easily available.

I have no idea why you would need one that long or how critical the 300mm length is, but shorter ones are sold so you could just use several stacked up.

There may be other solutions so it might be worth you giving more details of the proposed setup here when you might get some useful replies.

I must say I'm intrigued as to why you want such a long extension. Plenty of standard ones around.

                Hello Dan,

Please forgive the attack of the 'Mr-You-Don't-Want-To-Do-It-Like-Thats'

It seems a perfectly reasonable request to me, I assume you want to extend a tool to reach into or over something!

Making MT2 tapers and sockets is easy enough – even I can do it. The only issues are the between centres distance will demand a decent sized lathe, bigger than mine and whether or not you need a very high level of accuracy. If just to extend a drill, then it shouldn't be too demanding.

Depending on the duty it will be expected to do it may require a tougher steel which will take more effort to machine.

I can easily understand why you might not want to stack several sleeves!

                Neil

Basically I need (or think I need) such a long extension to reach into the workpiece, a large lampshade, to steady it for final turning , sanding and finishing. I can't use a centre steady as I would on a smaller piece as it's so large I'm operating near the limit of my lathes capabilities and there just isn't room underneath.

I also thought that stacking up several might not be sturdy enough and could introduce a bit of play.

I would pref 2mt, as all of my bits and bobs are 2mt

Vic, thanks for that link, they might be good. Graham, thanks also for yours. I couldn't get it to work but found it the old fashioned way. Couldn't see how long they are but I was being distracted y a six year old.

I've had a closer look the link Vic sent and rotagrip do one.

Thank you very much for your help guys

No doubt I'll be back soon, I've lots of projects coming up. The next one involves milling!

                    Over and out.
