I have just spoken to my son in Canada. He bought a S/H pillar drill (make SA LR 102902-6) about a year ago and has only just started using it but it runs anticlockwise. It seems to be a straightforward pillar drill with an induction motor and no reversing facility. What could be wrong with it please ?

It probably has a start capacitor and run capacitor. If so it could be start capacitor open circuit or missing. Centrifugal start switch for the start capacitor stuck open circuit. Broken wire in the start capacitor circuit.

These are not in any special order. The start capacitor starts the motor going in the correct direction then is disconnected when the machine is up to speed.

A photo of the wiring going into the motor would help, if I'm right, just swapping the correct two wires might do the trick.

                Hi Guys,

I've had that, a stuck open CF switch ! The motor starting in different directions at random.

Try spinning it by hand in the correct direction and then start it while spinning, if it runs in the right direction then the start circuit is u/s as mentioned above.
