Well a while ago I ordered some lathe tool holders from ebay and they arrived and fitted without ant issues so decided to order some more from the same person but they never arrived. Ordered some from someone else and they all got taken to work to be re-machined because none of them were the same dimensions and only one of them fitted the tool post.

Anyway decided from now on to make my own. Machined the lump of steel to the dimension required and cut the slot near to size ready for the dovetails. Dont have a dovetail cutter so decied to make one. Everything was going really well, or so I thought, right up to when I was going to fit it in the mill for a test cut then realised my mistake.

Hopefully I`ll cut the next one the right way.

Just run your mill in reverse?

So can't you just run the spindle backwards?

I have made a few myself. Interesting. I did cut one a tad too wide. I watched tubal caine doing one last night & he used 2 dowels to get the width correct. Never thought of it myself. If I had I would not have errored. Good luck.

              Steve.

Unfortunately my mill doesnt run in reverse. Standard single phase drive.

Ian, if I put my SX4 into tapping mode I can run the spindle backwards, just a thought as I only realised this after having the machine for nearly twelve months…

Oh, thank goodness – I'm not alone! I thought my ability to carefully, and with great deliberation, make something completely – and I mean completely – wrong was unique. Do you think there are any more of us out there? Anyone?

Nice bit of work, though. It just needs to be rotated in a fourth spatial dimension (if you can find one), and all will be as intended.

                            [edit because of sub-total SNAFU]

Making left- and right-handed parts has been my downfall before now – even after carefully noting to myself that the parts must made different after the initial shaping!
