Does the alignment of halves of scroll lathe chuck matter?

After a while sat to one side, I've got round to reassembling a Pratt 3 jaw centring chuck (shown in the above photo).

However I now realise that I forgot to mark which of the three 120 degree positions the two halves can mate. I know that some tools are fitted to high tolerance where order of assembly does matter.

My question is: does the 120 degree position matter for this type of chuck?

Are you sure there are no marks on it ? I suspect that it does matter. Still you will only have to reassemble it three times at most

There is a discolouration at 5 o'clock on the left-hand (back) half that looks suspiciously like the rectangular cut-out at 8 o'clock in the central portion of the right-hand (front) half. My suspicion is just flip one over in their current orientation. Then again, trying all three would give you the chance to see if a change improves concentricity.

look carefully at the mating surfaces, and see if you can find any matching patterns or "telltales". Anything that can be reassembled in more than one orientation should be marked before stripping it. but you know that now I do this often myself, and find myself saying "I should really be marking this" as I pull it to bits!

The negative of the L4 stamping at 8 o'clock on the right side is quite clear to see at 4 o'clock on the left. You have the orientation correct in the pic, just flip one side over on top of the other.

As others above have discerned, just flip over. An improved version of your image shows the corresponding marks fairly clearly.
