Maybe an odd question but… Did Myford do an alternative saddle for the Super 7. I have the Newall DRO to fit and the saddle looks different, and is curved so the brackets are not sitting flat. The photos I have found on the net show a nice machined surface the brackets are sitting square to. Where my lock nut sits the area has been machined so that area is flat but there is a gentle curve across the rest.

The saddle I have looks like this LINK but I'm pretty certain I have a Super 7… although now I'm not… just confused.

Checked the serial number and its a Super 7 1971-1973

Only help I can offer is that my S7 is of 1996 vintage and this is what hte saddle looks like compared to the one on your Fleabay link. I was about to fit a Machine-DRO kit and everything was nicely flat and square.

Thanks for the reply.

Doing a bit of research Myford changed the bed width around 1972. Mine is a narrow bed and shares the ML7 saddle. Machines after 1972 have a wider bed, with the power cross feed being introduced and a new saddle.

Looks like I will be sending the DRO kit back as that's not mentioned on the website. They do another for the ML7 and Super 7 which I probably need.

What is the difference in the bed dimensions between the narrow and wide-guide models? I had, naively assumed that it was only the saddle.

I think so, I’m no expert by any means, just what I’ve read. I don’t know if there’s a physical size difference on the overall width but the back rail looks wider in photos??

The history page on Myford stated the change was to accommodate the power cross slide.

If you care to look at My Album, you will see an early Myford S7 fitted with Newall NMS300 DRO and a later Myford S7 fitted with Newall Industrial DRO.

Ah they’re great! Did you have any problems with the curvature of the saddle? I don’t suppose you’re able to take any close ups of the back of the saddle and mounting points?

Yes machine flat, that way the read head is also below the cross slide top surface level.

Since the head is fixed by screws into slots, you could with a little care and measurement from the back shear top surface, file the surplus away. (or find someone with a mill)

I'm assuming you want he wings to be flat. How about using a planer/shaper to machine them. Don't have a planer or shaper? Have another look at your cross slide.
