Remind's me of when I worked in a steel works the 'Roller' the guy who measured the hot steel on the mill floor had the largest pair of outside calipers I have ever seen when closed from top to tips had to be 36" !

Yes, but being a model engineer, surely you've accepted that size is one of the things you have to compromise on…devillaugh

The longer the better for making checks on a near red hot lump of steel, I would have thought!. A sensible fellow, I would say.

Moore and Wright used to make 48" squares. I used to have 36" one. They were used mainly in plate layers shops.

This is a chesterman 1970 36 inch inspection square.
The stock has an engraved identification mark:
                  DECCA RADAR INSP B101
Not sure if this identifies it as a tool room item.
It’s a mighty thing and will be part of a display of unique tools in my home.

I'd think it possible but unlikely. Companies operating to DEFSTAN 05-21, which Decca Radar certainly would have been, were required to structure QA as a separate admin branch represented at Board level. This was to forestall the risk of commercial drivers overriding QA decisions.

It's possible that QA/Inspection might've had its own gaugemaking shop in such a large company, and it would have done the bulk of its own calibration and gauge maintenance, but I'd doubt that gauges belonging to either of those subdivisions would've just been marked 'INSP'. Your square was most likely a gauge used generally by Inspection on the shop floor.

I’ve popped a close up of the makers Mark in my albums that shows the name and model number and also the stamped inspection Mark. The stock is engraved DECCA RADAR insp. I cleaned it up a little this morning and put some beeswax on and it looks superb. SWMBO already has a spot picked out for it when the decorations come down.

It's not how big it is that counts, it's what you do with it wink

What's the stock made of? It looks like Tufnol or suchlike?

Must be poor lighting. It’s cast iron. The blade is actually a full L shape and the stock two separate sides riveted on to it. There is a separate steel piece held in the end of the stock by a screw which has a toothed outer edge like a grip piece, not sure if it’s function.

This is the square next to a 19 inch Moore and Wright micrometer. Will make a nice display!

Came across this youtube video around the 2 min mark you'll see the 'Roller' taking a measurement but as it's only a small bar being rolled he's smaller callipers

Just s boilers have to have an ID mark for their annual inspection.to know which boiler is being tested the square would have had to have the ID mark for its annual or probably 9 monthly test and re-certification, even if that was done internally. The ID would have been recorded on the paperwork or perhaps to a particular inspector or test station and thus traceable through the paperwork. I guess a lot of us worked to 05-21 back in the day but we don't see it mentioned a lot.
