From the 17th to the 19th , my wife and I went to York , there was a Dolls House Exhibition which she likes to visit on the Sunday .

We spend Saturday walking York and “Shopping” , but she is very good and always allows me to look into Barnitts , the hardware store , well for a few minutes!

My eye was taken by a pair of 50mm G clamps , I know , but you can’t just walk out with nothing in hand can you ?, however , when I examined them on getting into the workshop on Monday , I found that the gripping face had been ground at an angle and was less than suitable for holding parts properly.

I emailed Rolson customer care , who I turn asked me to send photo shots , which I did . Staggeringly , today , I received a new pristine pair in the post , no argument . This ,I feel, is amazing service , considering its value and the trouble they must have gone too to sort this , I think they deserve gold star listing .

I have no connection with either company mentioned above .

I have found that Rolson supply some innovative ideas as tools, but the quality is not high.

Trouble with them is that they are OK (generally) for light use – or once, if heavy use. Cheap, so buy cheap, buy twice often applies.

But obviously good customer service, so cannot complain too much.

I always used to treat Rolson tools as cheap 'single use' things you bought to get you out of a hole, and if they kept working, great.

Over the years the quality has been increasing and I see their market penetration is getting much greater. Still very much a budget brand, but some of the things they sell are indeed quite innovative/useful.

Maybe there is Rolson and then a different Rolson. Some years ago I bought a 4 inch Rolson [with a battered aluminium label saying so] machine vice on a rotating base from a local auction house who sell tools and machinery. It is very solidly made, accurate and well finished. It is also reassuringly heavy and came complete with a cranked square socket handle.The jaw plates were unmarked.

I got it for door stop cost as it would not retract the jaw having wound it out but all it needed was a new cross pin in the screw to fix it.

No doubt that was why my Record No. 3 was thrown out!

Rolson still sell some 4" and 3" vices, but trading for over 30 years, their business model may have changed.

Rolson Tools – incorporated in 1985, changed hands some time between than and 990 to the current owners.
