Hi Guys

Could anybody please advise me where I can purchase some chuck jaws springs. I am in the process of refurbishing a small German made breast drill and one of the springs is missing. I have Googled and only been able find references about these springs in the US.

The od is 3.64mm

the length is 16 mm

Try ball point pens or disposable lighters. These are full of small springs that might be suitable.

Old computer printers and copying machines are another source of springs, along with many other goodies.

Had a similar problem with the centralsing chuck from a Pollard tapping attachment. I'm pretty sure that the return springs out of empty air freshener aerosol cans turned out to be sufficiently close to the right size. Maybe after cutting down to length.

The springs need to be all the same to keep it in balance which an odd one won' t do. But the actual strength is less important. I suggest you look for a new long spring that has the necessary outer diameter and cut it in 3.

Exactly what I was doing last week, refurbing my old Stanley enclosed hand drill. I ended up buying a cheapo chuck from Machine Mart just for the springs.
Worth a fiver if I get another 40 years out of it.

It is possible to straighten, and rewind the spring from a ball point pen(the one I tried), I used a nail for a mandrel, I wound it in a close form then stretched it.
