Hello, just found these good videos on U tube, coming under OXTOOLCO, a chap named Tom Lipton I think. Theres a particularly good one, over an hour long, on buying a lathe. Interestingly, in one of the videos making pins, I couldnt help but notice on the rather nice lathe he is using, what looks like about a 10 inch, 6 jaw SC chuck, with Pratt Burnerd , made in England, written on it !!. Anyway, nice bloke, and worth watching I think.Cheers.

PS, Im hoping JS can put a link for the videos, I havent a clue Im afraid ! wink

Thanks both for that. Another of his many videos is titled " Toms 2 cents worth on Vice Tramming ", brilliant. Tom makes a nice reference to John of Doubleboost fame with regards to his idea of Ikea lamps in the video about tools. Cheers.

I can't think why, but when he skimmed the face true, why didn't he turn a register diameter the same size of the existing bore in the part? This would have saved a lot of time when clamping the part to the plate later?

                  Andy,

Didn't think of that solution – DUH!

I was, however, shouting at him to put either a short thread or jacking screw in the centre hole of that disk, to be able to free it.

As soon as he resorted to using a hammer to get it to seat, I saw problems, but he did eventually solve it.

                  Wood for trees scenario.

Is that his private workshop, or very understanding employers/friends?

Geoff – A day to chill out.

The title of this thread is 'More good machining videos'. Well I watched most of that one but I would nor describe it as good. I have no authority or right to criticise as I could not do better myself) but I found it repetitive and mostly boring.

From the information I could glean by looking at the part, his lathe and chuck etc I am sure the hole could have been opened up in 15 minutes total. He could have removed the chuck and fitted the faceplate and saved himself a lot of time.

Did he say why a 1/8" thick part of folded sheet needed the bore to be at such a precision right angle that his aluminium plate needed skimming? Earlier he said the bore was to 3.75" 'plus a bit' so that does not sound great accuracy was required.

I spent hours catching up on Keith Fenner's site on U Tube. Turn Wright Machine Works. He's a good all rounder machinist. **LINK**

He's posted a very clever way to properly tram in a mill vise as Roger has already mentioned. That was a brand new and very welcome idea to me. So many thanks for the heads up. Yes the first video was repetitive and probably boring, but there was quite a bit of useful info in it. Much better than a lot of videos that aren't boring, yet the information can be anything but correct. Just because it's on Youtube it obviously doesn't mean it's automatically 100% right.
