Make sure it’s very secure when you use it, I’ve seen bits of steel launch themselves amazing distances when people tried to use a simple hydraulic jack as a press.
If it comes out of alignment it flips itself effortlessly into orbit, you see newtons law at it’s most beautiful as heavy steel appears to effortlessly defy the laws of gravity
The last time it happened the 2nd mate told me his great idea for getting a ramp pin sorted
I said uh-huh, well you be damn careful, and went up the road
I came back to find that he’d been carted off to hospital after a glancing blow to the head, he was lucky, most of the energy was expended launching that 3kg steel pin out into the bay…splosh…
If the engine room was forced to do a job needing an imrovised press then they usually used a slightly mad third or 4th engineer while everyone else retired to a safe distance.
