What toolpost for Chester DB7

Hi guys I’m looking to purchase a wedge type tool post for my Chester DB7 lathe and have been looking at arc euro trade model 000 code number 09007000351 in there catalogue, but don’t know if it would be a straight swap or would it need machining.

I use a 000 size wedge type toolholder from Arc on my 9×20 lathe and it suits it very well. I think the chester DB7 is slightly smaller, so the 000 size should fit fine. I would be surprised if anything bigger would be suitable.

I also fitted the Arc thrust race kit, ostensibly for Myfords, which has improved the action of the locking nut, in my opinion. See here.

Thanks john that’s the one I’ve been looking at, but I think it will need a bit of modifying I took my tool post of today and where it’s mounted on the top slide it’s not flat and after removing the 10mm threaded bolt there is a raised boss, that looks to be about 20mm dia x 6mm, I didn’t measure it but it looks like it would need a 20mm x 6mm deep hole drilled in the base of the quick release tool holder, so don’t know if that could be done, has any body else have any ideas.

Thanks guys but I’m not really any the wiser it looks like I can’t use a wedge type tool post on my DB7, but what about a piston type, will the base have to be bored out, can it be bored out ? , to fit the stud and I know the screw is 10mm will that have to be altered or replaced as well, or is there another alternative that I could use.

Mike, unless someone with a DB7 reads this most of us won't be able to help as we have no idea of what the topslide on your lathe is like. It would help if you posted a photo of the topslide with existing toolpost removed, height from the surface the toolpost sits on to lathe centre height and diameter of the stud sticking up from it. We could at least then give an idea of what may fit. If you are anywhere near ARC then take your topslide in to them and see what fits.

Mike, have a look here Journeyman's Workshop which describes fitting a wedge type tool-post to a WM25 lathe which is slightly larger than yours but from the same stable (Weiss). There are two pages which describe mods to the top-slide boss to take the new stud and tool-post, also details a new tool-post that fits on the cross-slide.

I can see that the boss would be a problem and instead of removing it , I think I would make a spacer to fit over it to bring the topslide "up", as it were. That will retain the strength. Ideally surface grind the spacer and topslide, or failing that make the spacer slightly thicker than the boss. Think big rectangular washer.

Thanks guys this a photo of the top slide 10mm bolt, the stud is 20mm x 4mm, base of slide is 25mm to centre.

That's exactly what I did with mine…. Square plate, 1/4 thick as I recall, 18mm hole in the centre. I want to screw it down to the compound, but not done that yet. It works well. Do avoid the slanted parting tool holder though unless you're prepared to mill off some of the bottom. The ordinary flat parting tool holder works well with a 3/32nd HSS blade.

The thick square washer is certainly the easiest option providing that the tool-tip can go down to centre height.

Thanks for that lainchy it looks to be the arc 000 wedge tool post, did you use the bolt that is supplied and is it long enough, and does it use the standard tool holders or the shorter ones.

Yep, with the plate, everything is standard. The original tool post bolt goes into the box of bits for the lathe, and you use the one supplied with the new toolpost. The only thing I'd say, is that the flat holder for the parting blade, has the height adjuster right down, as in, the blade is almost as high as it will go, but so far, its been perfect. You need this blade holder…** Link ** if you're going that way. ARC's pricing on the holders is pretty good.

 

Sorry (Edit) Standard tool holders are fine. 250-001 – just the 007T and a 3/32nd blade if you go for the HSS blades. 1/16th is too thin I find.

Thanks Lainchy recieved parcel yesterday from arc that was ordered Monday, and today I finished modifying my arc quick release wedge type tool post, as suggested I Turned the supplied thick washer down to 5mm to fit over the boss on the cross slide, and bored out the 10mm tapped hole to 18mm, and l am very pleased with the results,
