Hobbymat MD65. RAL colour anyone? Just come into possession of a very nice example and I’d like to touch in a few bits and bobs.

      Stew.

Not sure of the RAL code but you could try this as a pretty good match?  https://www.paragonpaints.co.uk/Atlas-Copco-Yellow.html

If not then they may know if you contact them.

Hi Stew, I don’t know the RAL colour, but when I resprayed my Hobbymat, I used Plasti-kote Sunshine Yellow. It wasn’t a exact match, but it was very close.

The photo below shows the gearbox guard original colour on the left, and the Sunshine Yellow resprayed headstock on the right, the guard being very slightly lighter.

          Regards Nick.

ChatGPT searches the web better than most of us …

The Hobbymat MD65 lathe was originally manufactured in a distinctive yellow hue, often described as a mustard or ochre yellow. While the exact RAL colour code used by the manufacturer isn’t officially documented, enthusiasts and restorers have identified RAL 1006 (Maize Yellow) as a close match.

Very clever of you, Bazyle … but it doesn’t do much to answer the opening question.

Thanks for your assistance chaps. I’ve come close to a match with some of the suggestions, but not exact. I’m no coatings expert but I’m guessing the original paint will have faded over the last 36 years, (or does some paint darken…)

Yellow seems such a random choice for a machine produced by the GDR, you normally associate that place with somber and drab colours. They were aiming to sell to the west, but yellow?!

                  Anyhow, I digress.

Thanks again. If I find a match I’ll post the results.
