If you like the idea of helping people with your skills, have you considered joining REMAP?

In case you don’t know, REMAP is a national charity that creates solutions to problems encountered by people with disabilities. Although its been going for more than 60 years relatively few people have heard of it.

Essentially, if a disabled person (we don’t care about gender, age, or ethnicity) requires a device, or modification to an existing device, to assist them in any way, then, as long as there is no commercial solution available, we will make or modify it, free of charge.  Last year the Coventry & Warwickshire REMAP panel, which covers all of Warwickshire had over 90 jobs (almost 3 times as many as usual) and we have just 6 engineers. I’ve been a member for over 20 years. We are desperately short of engineers. If you are interested in joining as an engineer then please contact the panel chairman at [email protected]

We are not paid, but we can claim for expenses and travel.

Gary, I’m also a volunteer engineer with REMAP and in the last couple of weeks I’ve been swithering over whether or not I should start a post like yours above. You’ve beaten me to it!

The only thing I would add is that this is a National charity, there are groups in most areas of the country some large some smaller but all groups tend to be in the same position, we need new recruits.

If you have practical skills, have access to workshop, and fancy the idea of helping people who really do need very specific solutions to their problems then get in touch with REMAP via https://remap.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer/  you will be put in contact with your local group chairman.

What’s in it for you? Well I can honestly say that after a very satisfying career as a Veterinary surgeon the satisfaction and outright joy I’ve experienced in helping people via REMAP exceeds anything that’s gone before.

        Please give it a thought.

        Alan

Please permit me to encourage you fine chaps

Near 50yrs ago, I joined the local REMAP group and did a couple small but very satisfying projects.

Then, having changed jobs and moved house, ‘life got in the way’

Now, at 76 and in frail health … I am much more likely to be a client than a provider.

            I’ve emailed.

I’m hopeful of using my enforced free time (due to my failing health…) to some greater good!
