      Hi all.

I’ve recently acquired a QuickStep mill which is working fine, but leaking significantly around the front spindle bearing.

I know the seal size required from the article in MEW 52, but I’m a little bewildered choosing between different types of seal: With or without springs, single or double lip, Nitrile or Polyurethane, or maybe even Viton?

I’m almost tempted to buy the most expensive (the price isn’t that high, <£10), but having a rational behind the choice would help me sleep at night!

      Thanks.

A double lip seal with a spring – to keep oil from coming out and to stop debris going in.

Plain nitrile will do, it’s neither a particularly demanding application nor in contact with ‘difficult’ substances.

Edit; you can always take the spring out if it labours at high speed..

Fab – thanks – I’ll find a double lip seal – interestingly, I took the spindle out to double check the size, and it’s not as I thought that the seal was damaged – it simply wasn’t there at all…!

            Makes it easy to diagnose.

I worked on a large mill servicing it from time to time and the spindle seal would wear and when it was worn the actual contact area with the spindle would increase and the spindle would get warm with the friction caused if it wasnt changed the heat would get quite hot and I would get called to change the seal. It was an easy fix with a few cap screws in a cover ring removed lever out the seal and replace seal and cover but you can see the lip had a small flat. Job done.
