Hi

I have just purchased a old Myford ML7 Lathe am just getting used to it , going ok up to now .

I was looking inside the Gear cover at the end and there is a list of gears to choose for what ever TPI etc that you require , now I understand the Gear change , but I am a little puzzled at the end column heading " Lead Screw" , now I know what the lead screw is but I have no idea what the numbers down the column mean ie , 20,45,50,55,60,65,70,75 .

Am I missing something here ! .

The numbers refer to the teeth carried by each gear in the train. The last gear (75t) is the one which you fit on the leadscew.

Stan ,the lead screw column shows the change wheels required to complete the gear train selected. The numbers refer to the number of teeth on the change wheel to be fitted to the lead screw. Hope that helps.

Ah ok , I thought the Lead screw gear was fixed , got it now .

It might help you to get yourself a copy of Martin Cleeve's book "Screwcutting in the Lathe". It's one of the Workshop Practice series so cheap as chips to buy. It starts at beginner level and goes through to more than you will ever want to know and is all based on Myford lathes. Well worth a look.
