road registration and traction trailer.

Hello  all.

I have done a search in the traction engine section but not managed to draw up anything on this subject, so some assistance please from those who have already done it.

Having now got my 3 ” Burrell to a steady reliable runner ( 4 years after build completion !) I would like to road register it. Can anyone point me in the direction of some reading material/ information  of what info and documentation I am likely to require for DVLA and also what test or inspection regime is necessary, over and above boiler testing. Is single vehicle type approval required.

The boiler was actually built and 2xWP tested back in the 1980’s and I do have this original ticket.

Secondly I note a similar request to this second one was made back in 2010 without response, but other than John Haining 2″ drawings in ME  which I appreciate can be scaled; are there any drawings for traction trailers in 3″ and are there any other drawings for implements/ thresher/ living vans / plough/ mole drainer,  roundabout tackle etc in 3″ available please? and are John Hainings full size drawings separately available on paper instead of just copies from the ME articles?

Hello. My son has recently done this, he says.

Easiest place to look is legacy vehicles.co.uk as they have guide what to do. Basically fill in form V55/4 and V627/1 from DVLA website. Get VIN number first, then registration number. Worthwhile reading the guides for each form on DVLA website too.

Looks like guide on legacy vehicles.co.uk has been taken down.

Following my earlier post, I did copy the traction talk article it was posted by Diesel Dan, plus some other info and i have them saved as a MS Word document. if you send me a PM with your email i will forward them.

I did the same thing with a garden tractor a few years back so I could drive it lawfully across a road onto public land where I used it to cut grass etc.

The dvla forms were pretty straightforward and their main concern was the age of the vehicle. I ended up with a letter from the company who bought out the company who used to make this tractor saying it looked to be a 1979 model. Hey presto I got a V5 and a number plate.

I sorted out insurance,  it didn’t need tax or an MOT so I was fully road legal.

First time out I sneaked up on a police car and asked them to check out my tractor.

They were amazed that it came back fully documented and congratulated me.

But then they said “we don’t really give a toss, you could have been driving the wrong way down the M1 naked on this thing and we wouldn’t have bothered stopping you. We don’t have time for this kind of Sh1t”

Talk about a lot of effort for nothing.
