I am building a 5” sweet pea and on the plans it says the
right hand engine leads. I understand
this to be the typical arrangement for UK locomotives. When quartering the wheels I take this to mean when the loco is going forward the
right hand crank pin is in front the left hand crank pin by 90 degrees. So when pushed along the bench the right hand
crank pin will be at the top of the wheel then still going forward the left
hand crank pin will be in the same place a quarter of a turn later?>>

          Yes.

If you use the 1/4 method used in Jack Bucklers Sweet Pea book, and you use the chuck end of the lathe as the left hand side, looking from the rear of the loco, then you will get the right hand engnine leading by 90deg all built in automatically.

I’m about halfway through Metre Maid.
