Record 3.5″ vice

I recently purchased a good condition Record 3.5" bench vice. The mounting holes measure up to a non-metric size. Would M10 work OK with suitable washers and nuts? Are there any drawings of this model in case I need to "service" it at some stage?

I bought a secondhand 4" record vice 53 years ago, the only servicing that its had is a squirt of oil on all sliding surfaces once a decade. It is getting a bit sloppy now, but I think it will see me out.

Mike….m10 would work if m10 is the BIGGEST that will fit ( ie if m12 doesn’t)…what I am saying .use the biggest you can fit …you will seldom think..oh I should have used smaller bolts.

Hi Mike, as Jason says about the bolts, but how much/often you'll think you will need to service it, I don't know. I would suggest that a blow out with an air line every now and then, and like Frank says a squirt of oil on all the slidey bits and the thread should do.

If you feel you have to take it apart, it is fairly simply, no real need for any drawings (never sen any myself) just open it up as far as it will go and at the back you should find a pin stopping the nut from comming out of the dovetail.

Then if you turn it over you will see a split pin in front of a washer and spring at the handle end of the moving jaw.

This will have to be removed before you can extract the thread from the nut, but before you unwind it out of the nut you will need to tap out the pin in front of the nut and then using a mallet, tap on the end of the handle to knock the nut out of the dovetail.

The thread can then be wound out and you will then be able to remove the nut allowing the moving jaw to be slide out completly. Reassembly is the reverse procedure as they say. If you are unsure that you can't remember how it all goes back, take photos of each step as you take it apart.

Every time I have fitted a vice I have bought Coach Bolts with rounded heads and they come in Imperial sizes. You should get them at any hardware shop. Googled just then and there are loads of suppliers.

I'm guessing that you're asking because the bolts are well slack in the holes. That would seem to indicate that M12 or 1/2" would suit it better. Most makers of this sort of general workshop gear will allow for metric and imperial. Unless your vice is antique. You can use the M10s temporarily, but I'd advise heavy washers, in other words, thicker than 2mm.

If you don't have them or can't get them, ask a friend who works on cars. Cylinder head bolts use heavy washers and so do suspension bolts.

Upgrade the bolts to the biggest size that will fit when you can.
