QCTP Operation

I've been looking at the Arc QCTP offerings, eg models 100 and 111. The clamping handle appears to be non-detachable. In that case, how is the operation of this handle arranged so that when the tool-holder is clamped tight to the post, it's not pointing in some inconvenient direction. Presumably, adjustment of the working position is possible, but the method isn't very obvious, (at least to me!).

I haven't used one of them but I think that the centre bolt adjusts the play on the cam for the top handle. So in theory you should be able to adjust it so that you can position the top handle out of tour way.

Thanks for replying Ian. If that's the case, I worry that different tool-holders could give different handle positions, depending on manufacturing tolerances. If tool-holder change-over also needs a centre-bolt adjustment, that rather spoils the QC aspect. Perhaps the effect isn't too marked in practice.

Hi Clive, I've one of each to try with the SC4. I've modded one to fit but not used it as I want to show beginners they don't need a QCTP to get started. It will appear in a future instalment, but I'll take a look tomorrow.

When fitted to the lathe with the faces that take the holders in the normal position the operating handle will swing in an arc from 2 loose to 6 o'clock locked

As IP. The handle is not a locking thread, but simply a cam – so either ‘in’ or ‘out’. The only thing that will influence its position, when clamped, would be a poorly machined toolholder having excess clearance before tightening on the dovetail.

It depends on what position / tool holder is used, the handle will move accordingly, sometimes putting it in an inconvenient position.

Its a bit awkward when using multi-tools at the same time.

It is possible to assemble the central block (with the two clamping faces) with the handle facing in three (I think) different directions. Might be four. So, if your's is assembled so that the tightening lever is in an awkward position, it is a simple matter to move it round.
