Printing

Hi All

Occasionally I wish to print a page or part thereof off a specific page. When I right click I get a sub-menu, one option of which is PRINT. If I click on this option then get my usual box offering which printer to use. I click on either of my printers and then OK. The print I get is an enlarged version of the top left hand corner of the left hand page that includes only the blank left hand side plus the three option at the top left hand corner.

None of the text prints.

The need for this is when a circuit diagram exists on the page and I would like a paper copy to take to the work bench.

Any help gratefully received.

For prints of that type, I would use the PrtScn function. With the item you want on screen, press Ctl and PrtScn. Then open the Paint program in Windows and Paste. The screen image will appear and can be cropped to the required area and saved as a jpg or whatever image type is available. Manipulate and print as needed.

Hi Brian,
You do not say which operating system you are using. These comments are based on the assumption that you are using a version of Windows. when I right click on part of a web page (Weather highlighted or not.) I do not get the print option. If I just want to save the text I highlight it, right click on it, select copy and paste it into a text editor. (Or Microsoft word.) If I want text and graphics I highlight the section, right click, copy and paste into Microsoft word. If these methods do not work I use Gadwin Systems "Print screen" This only saves the selected part of the screen as a .bmp picture so it is not as useful but better than nothing.

I don't get that option if I right click.

I do however have a "Snipping Tool" ( This is in Win 7) If I click on this and then outline the bit I want it will copy it and it can then be printed or imported to any image processing program.

Brian,

This depends as much on your operating system as the browser you're using (Internet Explorer – eghhh….., Firefox, Chrome?)

Perhaps first selecting the areas you wish to print will help you get what you want, while saving ink and paper too;

Find the end of the bit you want to print, left click hold and drag up the article to the start of the bit you want, let go of the left and then single right click and print, you should now just get the posts and headers selected

(I find this direction of selecting more controllable than going top to bottom!)

If it then tries to print this in the same odd way It's likely the printer preferences which could be specific to the printer your using or managed by the operating system (Windows?) depending on your setup.

I've not heard of the Snipping tool. I've just tried it and it does almost the same as Gadwin Print Screen.

If you are using Chrome, click on the 3 bars on the right of the header bar and you can then click on, 'Print'

This gives me a block on the left of the screen for printing and the whole page of what i want to print on the right side! If there are multiple pages it will show all the pages numbered downwards.

If you are using Firefox consider the 'Capture and print' extension – it's basically an easy way to do a screengrab of the area you want and print it out directly:

Oh and another tip is to install one of the many free PDF printer drivers (so you print to it just like any other printer, but instead of printing onto paper it creates a PDF file which you can view and/or save to hard disk). This lets you check that it has printed what you want before committing to spending out on paper and ink! Try e.g.

Hi all respondants

Many thanks to the 7 of you that have replied. Somewhere down the line none make a lot of sense. So I will clarify my setup and actions taken.

My PC runs Windows 7 Home version. Browser is Firefox

To get to the magazines I click on the menu item MAGAZINES. This give me a list of digital magazines I subscribe to, in this case only 1 i.e. MEW. O left click on the link. This brings up a page showing a number of issues available.

I left click on the issue I want to view. A new window opens and the issue is displayed and loads. I pass the cursor over the page and it turns into a magnifying glass with a cross in the lens area.

I cannot highlight an area with this cursor and I am unable to change the cursor to a different tool.

It appears that I am viewing the magazine in a version of Adobe Flash Player. and in the title bar are the words Magazine Viewer – Mozilla Firefox.

That's as far as I can get.

Any ideas please?

If as you say in the original post, you need this for printing circuit diagrams that appear on web pages, these are usually in the form of graphics files (jpg or similar). In that case, you can right click and select "Save Image as …", save it to a file then open that in your favourite graphics program and do what you will (change size, sharpen etc and print) from there. Or select "Copy Image" and paste it into your graphics program.

To print web pages I generally just select File > Print Preview which gives you a wysiwyg of the print out and you can adjust printing parameters to suit. If the printout goes into multiple pages, you can also select individual pages (or a range) when printing to save supplies (why do web pages always seem to spill two or three useless lines onto an extra page when printing?)

Hi Brian,
I did not realise that the question was in this specific context. I think the problem is related to the way "Pocketmags" distribute the PDFs. I used to have an electronic subscription to "Everyday Practical Electronics" At first it was a normal PDF file that you downloaded. This worked perfectly. They then changed this to their own format which was not very good quality and messy software was required to read it. As a result I dropped my subscription. They then started to use PDFs again so I re started my subscription. The problem was they were not normal PDFs. You could not for example copy items from a component list and paste them into a suppliers search box to see if they stocked them. Also you cannot read these PDFs using Android PDF viewers. I have now dropped my subscription again. I think this is the problem you are having. I can understand that they need to try to prevent unauthorised distribution so I can see their reasons for for these protection measures.

I also read the original post as meaning web pages but the new posting clarifies it's pages of the digital edition of the magazine, apparently displayed by some Flash wizardry. I have only a paper sub so can't check if my suggestions work in that case.

That's about the limit of the functionality in the archive viewer.

I think others have given you plenty of advice on how to circumvent our feeble protection against copying of the archive magazines

Hi Guys

Many thanks for the comments/suggestions, regrettably none of them work. Yes I suspected that that was the situation Neil. My reason for wanting to be able to download/print pages/magazine was so that I could have an archive of all the issues I have paid a subscription for. Reading these as a PDF file would enable me to manipulate any page to suit my current requirement. Which as a matter of interest was how I used the digital subscription when I first signed up. It seems that the publishers have altered the method of presentation to stop this.

Given the foregoing I can see no reason for subscribing to the digital edition, it just means I have to keep hold of all my paper copies!

Ah, if you have a digital subscription you are doing it the hard way! I thought you were a print subscriber using the archive.

Yes, sorry …. I thought you were talking about regular web pages too.

You can print from the PocketMag offline reader with the print icon at lower left …. 1 page at a time, indifferent quality and it prints with a watermark.
