I contacted Warco on Monday as suggested and explained me problem to Peter in the spares department. Although my model mill is obsolete the do still sell it's bigger brother. Peter spent some time looking through parts manuals and identified the part. He offered to dig the part out and measure it to see if it was identical, which it was apart from the bore which was 14mm where mine was 12mm. Part ordered and paid for and delivered this morning.

Set about hunting for some suitable tube to make a sleeve but nothing anywhere near. So set about drilling & boring some MS bar. Job done, now to fit it all together. Bugger, the new pinion is fractionally too wide. Put casting in the mill vice and Luckily my longest endmill was just long enough for me to skim the insides of the bearing arms. Job finally done and it works sweet as a nut.

Well done Peter at Warco; excellent service.

Went to do another job on the lathe and the bloody belt broke. Took the remnants of the belt to the local bearing supplier who offered to chase one up. He phoned me a couple of minutes ago, said he could source one at a price. I'm glad I was sitting down: £19 + VAT plus £12 + VAT carriage. What planet are these people on? £12 carriage for something that will fit in a Jiffy Bag. Just managed to source a belt on Amazon £16.26 inc delivery.

      Rant over.

My suggestion of flipping the pinion over so it was using the un-worn side not possible then?

                                Iain,

You have only yourself to blame ! Everyone knows that you should NEVER-NEVER start two jobs on the same day, more so if the first one has given you grief. That is called tempting the Gods !

Having said that,I never thought belts were that dear. The ones on my lathe are starting to show signs of old age, fraying at the edges [like myself ].Might be a question of which wears out first !

Strange the way they keep changing the sizes of machine parts, for no good reason. Came across that before, many times,it,s a P-I-T-A.

Maybe the first chap did not want the job?

Surprised that there was no other company nearby who could supply a belt, or link belting.

Was John Lewis, just ordinary curtains

She fortunately didn't order them and found a bargain alternative place with exactly the same material, remnant kings I think, at 500 bananas

We're in the wrong game guys

                                        Larry,

The incidents were on separate days, the gear on Sunday and the belt on Tuesday. The belt was my own fault as I ran the tool into the chuck, for the first time ever!embarrassed The belt is an M5710, it's only 5mm wide. I think it did well to last 16 years.

                                        Pete,

That was my plan if I was unable to source a replacement.

                                        regards Iain

                                          Iain,

Now follow up on the job with the advice that Jeff Dayman and I gave you to lubricate that assembly with high pressure grease, the photos you posted when first reported showed it was as dry as a bone.

And, while you are at it, treat the rack as well.

                                          Regards

Borrow one, it is a machine, you can use it and spend what you save on tools

I used to make kites, and probably have used my wife's machine to sew ripstop at least twice as much as she ever has – I certainly got through more needles.

You could always flog them and use the cash towards the curtains or even better some tooling for the workshop devil
