I don't mind nick names / pen names etc if the person signs off with a name.

there is nothing worse than replying to a post that starts.

      Dear BDX80T………………

Another pet hate is not knowing a posters location when they ask for advise, as this is the World Wide Web it doesn't help if you send them off to say Chronos for a part when they are in OZ.

        Hi guys,

        Interesting topic.

        Andy

PS Hang about…the originator uses one…why doesn't he explain?

        Andy,

Strangely, the originator adopted the use of Lambton after starting the thread.

… The best cyphers change, of course!

        MichaelG.

        ?? Lambton ??

          Quote from Andy B

noms de plume (hell I'm English – Pen Names!)

only slightly drifting off topic, but isn't 'noms de plume' a purely english expression anyway?

the French actualy don't use it.? I'm sure there is some posh linguistic word describing the invention of an expression by one language using words from another but can't recall it.

I agree John. That's why i said at the start of this thread just give us a clue where you are from. I did not mean a full address, just a rough location, I.E. town ! county ! or even country.

            Cheers Derek

              Hi John,

I agree with all you say, but this is another problem with this awful forum Software. As you know most decent forum sites have the posters location and some information about the poster in the avatar box, according to hte privacy settings of the user.

Most also have a 'signature' line below the main text box. These facilities may be available in this software used here but have not been activated, I suspect this because when I registered I ticked a box to say that my location could be displayed, but it has never been displayed anywhere.

Perhaps David or Diane, if David is too preoccupied with his new venture, could ask the tech boys to look into it, I'm sure that they are more than capable. What do you think?

              Regards

              Terry

An, 'Alias', something to hide behind or, 'Nom De Plume', an assumed name that a person writes under, so take your pick.

Hi, well I already have a Nick-name (smileypun intended) I don't have any problem with anyone who likes to choose a nickname, alias, pen name, pet name or whatever. I've been in industry all my working life and have meet many contractors and work mates with various nicknames but didn't know their real name, some of which can't be mention here. We even had a guy in our department for over 25 years and I never knew his real name. Only ever knew him as Tiny, which was a bit ironic, because he was a bit over 6' tall as broad as two average blokes and easily as strong as two if not three, nicest guy you ever could know and had nothing to hide as far as I know. He was only ever referred to as Tiny, even by the management.

                      Regards Nick.

P.S. Oh and I live in England if thats any help to anyone.wink 2

I think that having a pen name, particularly on this site puts us in good company.

                              think back, we've had

When I first came on here, I did use a nom-de-plume or whatever it is actually called but quickly gave up on it because on this forum I am unlikely to say anything really contentious – silly, daft, or even a mild complaint about someone's language, but that's about it.

However, there is another forum I frequent on which I will sometimes say what I really think, thoughts which are not perhaps quite pc and here I will be, and have been, told off. In this instance I would not want my real name published.

In addition, and this I think has been raised on this forum, there are some very knowledgable professional people contributing to this other forum who not surprisingly wish to keep their real names private as in some respects what they are doing could compromise their position. One example was when I contracted a specific illness about which I was unhappy, so I put out a question on the forum, and one of thes people, a GP, did indeed reply. Unfortunately he couldn't do anything other than give general advice.

For what it's worth, the illness, which is incurable, has been brought under control following two operations so perhaps I didn't need to ask the question, but I can see that there could well be a lot of treading on toes if names were bandied about.

In short then, I think the use of a nom – de – plume is dependant on the actual situation.

                                  Regards,

                                  Peter G. Shaw
