When I first came on here, I did use a nom-de-plume or whatever it is actually called but quickly gave up on it because on this forum I am unlikely to say anything really contentious – silly, daft, or even a mild complaint about someone's language, but that's about it.
However, there is another forum I frequent on which I will sometimes say what I really think, thoughts which are not perhaps quite pc and here I will be, and have been, told off. In this instance I would not want my real name published.
In addition, and this I think has been raised on this forum, there are some very knowledgable professional people contributing to this other forum who not surprisingly wish to keep their real names private as in some respects what they are doing could compromise their position. One example was when I contracted a specific illness about which I was unhappy, so I put out a question on the forum, and one of thes people, a GP, did indeed reply. Unfortunately he couldn't do anything other than give general advice.
For what it's worth, the illness, which is incurable, has been brought under control following two operations so perhaps I didn't need to ask the question, but I can see that there could well be a lot of treading on toes if names were bandied about.
In short then, I think the use of a nom – de – plume is dependant on the actual situation.
