      Hi,

I wasn't sure if this was the best place to put this, so please move if not appropriate.

I finally have a work space big enough to house a lathe so have taken the plunge and bought a 50's Myford ML7. I am documenting my Velocette build in video, so i thought I would extend it to include the lathe installation and set up.

I last used a lathe properly about 10 years ago when I did a short stint in a tool stores at an engineering company, so I would welcome any advice or links to refresher material.

      Cheers,

      Christian

Update, I have bought myself a copy of "Basic Lathework" by Stan Bray. Are there any other books on the subject that anyone would recommend I read while in lockdown?

The Amateur's lathe by L.H Sparey is well worth a read

Hello Christian and welcome. It may help to indicate roughly what part of the country (or world) you live in.

I agree with the above, The Amateur's Lathe is a good place to start. I dare say that other old bike enthusiasts will be along shortly.

"Using the Small Lathe" by L.C. Mason is worth a read .

I think that one reason for not running the chuck "empty" is that the jaws might make an unplanned exit. This happened to a friend who was testing a setup for rapid reverse for screwcutting; one jaw flew out and, amazingly, he had time to catch it and utter some workshop Esperanto.

Are you going to use coolant? If so, you might find that it makes its way past the grease under those raising blocks. More height can, of course, be gained by blocking up the feet.

Plus one for the book recommendations; depending on your taste, George Thomas Workshop Manual might also be a useful addition.

Thank you all very much for your suggestions. I think I am going to head on a shopping spree this afternoon.

I am based in Northamptonshire in the UK.

I was planning on cutting dry, with the odd use of cutting oil here and there. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information/opinions on coolant and other cutting fluid for my level of use.

Welcome to the forum. Plenty of old bike people on here. MAC's always welcome!

You'll find the old ML7 a good machine for bike resto work. Be careful because restoring old Brit machine tools can turn into a hobby to rival bike restoration. Then there is the making of all kinds of accessories and gadgets…
