Not so much about motorcycles but saw an impressive 125cc single cylinder GRM two-stroke powered hydroplane at Coniston speed week.

It broke National and World records for its class 84mph one way then 85mph return.

GRM make single cylinder, two cylinder and four cylinder two stroke outboard engines.

Am reminded of the Konig that was converted to racing sidecar use.

I said to my friend Roger it looks like you could make one in a home workshop.

Yesterday was talking to two fellow motorcycle speed record nuts hopefully next year a Gem gas turbine streamliner will be tested.

Friend Graham should be giving a talk at PEEMS club early next year about his steam rocket bike a work of engineering excellence.

Myself finished last night my crankshaft aligning with detachable straight edges for balancing jig.

The base feet and straight edges can be adjusted for levelling.

Apart for £2 for shims everything else was from my spares box the 20mm ally was donated by another speed enthusiast.

I made the crank cases, inner and outer ignition timing chain cover for this 350cc OHC engine from solid on a small round column Axminster mill a few years back.

                        Hi Windy,

within reason I don't think there is much that cannot be made with simple machinery in the home workshop. It takes time and as you will know you have to plan the sequence of operations otherwise you can engineer yourself into a corner you can't get out of.

I have got CNC capability now which is fantastic for generating complex shapes. I have just started a restoration of two Humber 350cc Motorcycles, an OHV and an OHC. Hopefully I will get one finished next year.

                          Very nice.

I presume alignment is on the top portion with the knife edges, and the balancing done below on the 2 pairs of brgs?

Many years ago, we did static balancing on our knife edges too.

Bob R – lovely work on the pre unit single.

The bearings are mainly for aligning the pressed up crankshaft similar to a Alpha-Tru aligner the straight edges for balancing.

So having found that it is out of true what do you do? Just hit it with a lead hammer, or do you scotch one side with a block to prevent it rotating?

This is probably becoming a lost art as Japanese bikes seem to last forever (I will now go and wash my mouth out)

Mine didn’t. It cost me £26.10s for a new crank for my Honda twin, back in 1969! Hate to think how much they are these days! It was likely the gearbox failure that precipitated the crank failure at ~21k miles, but the rod bearings were already at, or outsde, the service limits laid down (4mm rock at the small end?). No gaskets needed between the top and bottom crankcase/gearbox halves, mind – and no leaks afterwards.

Have seen video of one repairer having a stout upright fixed steel bar with probably a lead block on top just banging the offset flywheel on it a recommended way in some books.

It was PEEMS first club meeting of 2019 and what a treat for speed enthusiast members.

This small club was packed with members and guests many from the speed scene for my friend Graham Sykes Steam Rocket Bike talk.

Grahams Wife has a wealth of knowledge on this creation and was also involved in making the pressure vessel insulation blanket apart from other things.

Amongst the guest were previous talker Becci Ellis fastest women and others that have done fantastic speeds at Elvington, Pendine and other venues including the TT.

PEEMS has such a variation of interests that was the main reason why I joined years ago.
