ML10 backgear

Good afternoon from Australia,

I have recently gotten a ml10 lather and have was today for the first time going to use the back gear on it,

However ran into a problem with what appears to be the pulley and attach gear being sezied onto the spindle,  and their for the backgear won’t work

For content to engage the back gear I loses the ticking screw and then disengaged the pin that lock the spindle to the pulley and then moved in the tumber gears on the back.

I don’t have a lot of history on the lathe but their are some hand written notes in the maule outlineing the section that show the backgear so it must have been used but I down know how long ago that was.

I would be great full for any suggestions to get the backgear working

If you have loosened the Allen screw on the bull-wheel, behind the front headstock bearing and raised the slide which engages with the smaller gear teeth and then relocked it in the disengaged position, the bull-wheel should rotate freely on the spindle with the back-gear disengaged, i.e. the belt pulleys and the spindle nose can rotate independently. To loosen the screw you need a modified Allen key with the shortened end ground down to about 0.250″ long because there is only a small gap between the front bearing and the Allen screw head. If the parts do not rotate separately with the back-gear disengaged then the bull-wheel assembly is seized on to the pulley spindle. It is the engagement of the back-gear that provides the drive between the pulley spindle and the spindle nose.

The bullwheel is the large gear on the spindle. It is the part that is firmly attached to the spindle. The bolt you undo then slides a bit to release the small gear and pulley block. It is the pulley block and small gear that should then rotate freely on the spindle (with the back gear pair detached).

I got that far and modified an Allen key and disengaged the the the slide in the bulllgear, and it dose not rotate freely

 

Any thoughts on trying to seize the step pulley

To start find the oil hole. It should have either an oil hole with a screw sealing it, or a push button one at the bottom of one of the pulley grooves. NOT WD 40 which is a slow acting glue. 2-stroke petrol mix does the job if you don’t have a commercial release agent. Unless there are signs of it having been left in a damp garage or actually run until it seized the problem is most likely very old dried up oil.
