I know what "back gear" means when applied to a lathe but what does the back gear control knob on say, a Warco WM14 milling machine do?

The variable speed motor does not cover the full 50-2250rpm speed range. The Knob changes the gearbox to a high ratio giving 100-2250 or a low ratio giving 50-1125rpm and more torque.

This is standard on most of the variable speed mills on the lathes you change the belt onto one of two pullies

Havingv taken apart an X2 mill and a mini-lathe I think it's fair to say the spindle casting containing the gearbox is essentially (exactly?) the same, it's just machined slightly differently, notably the lathe headstock version has a groove to align it with the lathe bed.

The spindles are significantly different, though.
