Try www. stirlingengineforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=935 . They give the temperature of a meths flame as 1100 degrees C.

I repair meths stoves for boiling water in kettles and use soft solder, your burner is via a wick I assume so the container shouldnt get that hot.

Lead sticks and bakers fluid, no idea of grade as it was acquired from my father in laws tools which he left me, I make fuel tanks for my petrol engines without any problems.

Flame temperature isn't a good guide to it's actual heating ability. Bear in mind you can pour whisky or brandy on ice cream and burn it without the ice cream melting (why would ANYONE want to burn such things?)

You need a blowpipe to get a meths flame intense enough for even silver soldering the tiniest of items.

Glad about meths though..I m sure I cam build burner and tank lot cheaper than buying a gas one..Fumes arent the same either

Just read that properly – this is for the burner NOT the boiler.

I'd suggest using Comsol (286 degrees C) but bear in mind that the evaporating meths will cool the burner and once its all evaporated, there's nothing left to burn.

Come on Neil…….don't you put poison darts into a blow pipe……

Hi UJH i would use tin and resin flux or the self cleaning flux used by plumbers, this is slightly acidic so you need to wash of with water when finished, same with killed spirits. You could equally use tin mans solder 60/40 lead/tin but tin flows better and makes a stronger thinner joint. Tin you can buy the "lead free" solder at the plumbers merchant which is near enough pure tin.
