I can’t remember if this mag base ever worked properly, I bought it at a show many years ago.

As you tighten the knob the co axial rods are squeezed outwards to push on the ball joints.

The upper one is loose no matter how I assemble it, it seems the rod is too short

Does anybody have a similar one I could compare to please

Here's one of mine, it's similar to yours but different! The joint has two sets of wedges pushing against the rods, which have a wedged point. Hope this helps.

I've got one like the red one but I have not been able to get it apart. The original and best ones are made by Noga in Israel.

Making longer rods should be easy, some of the copies of original mechanisms are made by people who don't actually understand how they work.

              After watching this video **LINK**

it would appear to me you may be missing the distance piece he describes in the video

If i were to assemble it i would feed the locking shaft into the lower flexi arm from the left side , lining up the notch with the end of the locking rod then fit the distance piece from the right side followed by the large friction washer followed by the upper flexi arm then feed the short locking piece from the right side of the upper arm aligning the notch with the upper arm lock rod followed by the thrust washer and lock nut .

I tried to disassemble my one but couldn’t work out how it came apart but after watching the video and now knowing about the circlip i might give it another go !

                Thanks to those who helped!

I made a new distance piece and also managed to screw the end which holds the ball back on to the arm by putting axial pressure on it as I screwed. It seems there is a loose nut in the assembly which rotates otherwise.

this brought the inner rod to the correct length and with the distance piece it now works.

Nicely done! And I like the old school vernier caliper versus the bang up to date digital micrometer 😁

The micrometer is a 1.2” capacity and I’ve had it at least 11 years; the battery is yet to die. I like it a lot.

I use it to set the DRO when I first turn it on or setting a new tool.

The calliper is Mitutoyo also, sometimes I don’t need the hassle of turning on (finding a flat battery) setting zero before measuring a piece of bar stock to see if it’s 1” or 25mm nominal to know which collet I need.
