I am designing a travelling steady for my 9 x 20 lathe. It will have the capacity to support stock from 5mm to 95mm diameter and is, I think, a unique design. ( Expecting to be proven wrong ). What I need, to save me hours, if not days, of hacksawing and filing, is a ( preferably local ) laser cutting service. At one point I did have the name and address of a chap quite near me ( I'm now in Doncaster ) who did this but his contact details have got lost in the house move. The parts requiring cutting will be made from 3mm and 5mm thick mild steel plate. I will supply drawings in dxf/dwg/pdf etc as required.

Can anyone make any suggestions where I might get the job done, please?

      Thanks,

      John

I've used Lasermaster a few times, just e-mail the files and it comes back in the post.

              John C and Jason,

Thanks for those links. I've bookmarked both and will follow up on Monday.

I have no connection with this company, but after using several different laser cutting companies over the last 10 years have 'Microkerf' a breath of fresh air!

To be honest I have only used them one time a few weeks ago but the service was exceptionally good. What I like especially is that the process is fully automatic and generates quotes within seconds of the DXF file being uploaded so one can make changes and see the effect on cost. The quote generated give several prices (for 1 off, for the requested quantity, for 25, 50, 100, and also what the parts would cost if filling a full sheet of material.

As I said I only have one purchase experience but I will definitely use them again, the nine different parts I bought all cost less than the four other quotes I got

If you already have a air compressor you can pick up a chinese plasma cutter on ebay for £150-ish.

Ian P – I'll bear this company in mind, though I suspect the cost may be prohibitive unless they can tack my job onto another batch. Thanks anyway.

Jann – regrettably, I had to leave my compressor in France when we moved back to the UK and I have no immediate intention to replace it.

I use these people to cut stainless sheet to complex shapes and they do a good job for a competitive price.

I should add: I just send them DXF or DWG files. Don't even try using a Chinese diy cutter. The professionals cut to a fraction of a mm exactly as per a DXF file. The hand held devices are really for cutting off car panels in repair shops etc.

                          Jon,

Thanks. Another lead for me to follow up.

Eventually finalised the design and sent files to modelengineerslaser.co.uk and lasermaster. Only Malcolm at model engineers laser replied, so he got the job – at an extraordinarily reasonable price, I might add. I expect to be picking the pieces up some time next week and will probably start a new album to document the build.

                            Thanks to all responders.
